Blue Wave Systems Enhances ComStruct for v-commerce
Increased Vocabulary Capacity Makes ComStruct CPCI/C6400F Ideal for Voice-Enabled Services
CARROLLTON, Texas, Aug 31, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Blue Wave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: BWSI chart, msgs), a leading supplier of processing technology for the telecom infrastructure, has extended the functionality of its ComStruct(TM) CPCI/C6400F Digital Signal Processing resource board to allow it to be used for enhanced voice-enabled services. By providing the capability to double the external memory per DSP on the board, the company has enabled the CPCI/C6400F to handle larger vocabulary applications, including voice-activated navigation within web access, or v-commerce, and voice-enabled dialing in the wireless infrastructure. This enhanced product will be available in calendar Q4 2000.

Voice-based applications are predicted to be the driving force behind the convergence of the Internet, telephone services and call centers, and this development places Blue Wave's ComStruct product line at the heart of this fast-growing market. Industry research specialist, the Kelsey Group, has reported that, of the predicted $12 billion voice-based commerce market in 2005, $7 billion will be generated from service providers' expenditure on infrastructure.

"Most of the voice-recognition platforms available today use the host controller to perform the actual recognition and only use the DSP resources for signal conditioning functionality such as echo cancellation prior to recognition, which can limit scalability," said Karl Wale, Telecom Product Manager at Blue Wave Systems. "In a CPCI/C6400F-based system, signal conditioning and speech recognition are performed locally on the DSP, leaving the host microprocessor free to control and manage the platform. Also, distributing the calls over a number of boards removes the single point of failure. This makes the ComStruct building blocks more suitable for high-density carrier-grade applications and easier to scale up as the user's needs change."

The ComStruct CPCI/C6400F design now provides the capability for 32Mb of external SDRAM per processor, which is double the previous maximum. Featuring TI C6000 series DSPs and optimized for multi-channel processing, the CPCI/C6400 board offers network interfaces and a dedicated real-time system controller in a single slot. It can handle up to 32 channels of voice in real time and supports discrete language vocabularies of more than 5000 words.
