JC criticizes timing of Intel Lawsuit Against VIA:

In this market, I do not like signs of desperation. Intel is pursuing a lawsuit against VIA to block them from supporting the Athlon with their chipsets. While Intel's claims of patent violations may be valid, the announcement of this right after their recent 1.13GHz PIII issue really makes this look like a wrong move. Of course, as you know, the Athlon has a frequency binsplit advantage over the PIII, and
Intel will not be able to overcome this until at least the middle of 2001 (when Willamette/P4 becomes suitable and voluminous enough for the mainstream consumer market).
Preventing VIA from making chipsets for AMD's processors, however, would severely cripple AMD and allow Intel to
regain any lost market share.
Of course, I presume that this isn't actually Intel's reasoning for this lawsuit. But the timing here and the
consequences put Intel in a horrible light.
