September was the worst month of the year between 1969 and 1998. I did a study of this, which is available at:

mathematicalanalysis.com

I began the study intending to find out if there really is a "January Effect". It turns out that during those years there appeared to be a "November-January Effect" -- about 50% of the market's gains occurred from November through January.

September, meanwhile, was the only month when the market's average performance was negative.
