I really think that Lucent needs F-5. It's managament is under the gun, although they have some wonderful technology in the pipeline. They will soon shed "Araya" as they get their cash in order to compete with Nortel. If I were Lucent, I'd want F-5 and I'd be worried about many other players; Microsoft, if they dared amidst their legal problems, IBM, with their man in the decision seat, Intel, with their resources. Juniper, Foundry and Extreme probably just have their noses to the glass looking at F-5.
Today's action was the kind of thing necessary before a buyout. The stock has to run up so that the premium from time of announcement doesn't seem too extreme. But I don't see a bidding war. F-5 management will make their decision and go with it. Large insider control gives them that power. And Lucent would be my choice. I think it is much undervalued, perhaps by half. So a stock deal would be o.k.
Guessing, but I was close when I thought Nortel might be looking at F-5, which they were. By the way, thanks for noticing my posts.
