One possible cause of sudden shutdown problems is a virus called network.vbs. Microsoft has a distribution file called network.vbs that is 6K size. The virus is 3K size. Try a find on it. It doesn't seem to do any other harm and it spreads by searching IP's on the internet and seeing if file sharing is enabled with read/write enabled.
