Jeff, I have bought old gold and recent platinum unc and proof coins online through dealers and Ebay without any problems at all. I believe the original St. Gaudens double eagles graded MS-63 or higher should make for a very nice long-term return, irrespective of the yellow dog's price. Bought all the minted platinum sets in unc and proof condition since they were the first ever minted in the US and the current series will have a limited run with relatively low mintages. However, I am far from being an expert.
