LUCENT TO SUPPLY BROADBAND ACCESS EQUIPMENT TO GLOBE TELECOM

MANILA, Sep 01, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Telecommunications company Globe Telecom said that it has tapped Lucent Technologies for the supply of high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) access equipment.

By deploying Lucent's Stinger(tm) DSL Access Concentrator, Globe Telecom will be able to provide its customers with fast access to the Internet, high-speed IP VPN services and converged data, voice and video applications, it said in a statement.

The Stinger deployment supports Globe Telecom's initial service roll-out of Business Class symmetric digital subscriber line (SDSL) Internet access in Metro Manila's key Central Business Districts, and will later be made available in other key metropolitan areas in the country. Other service offerings based on asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) will also be rolled out progressively.

Globe Telecom said it expects that offering this access technology will lead to significant revenue growth for its fixed-line business.

DSL is a technology that packs data onto copper wires for connections from a telephone switching station to a home or office. The technology will allow Globe Telecom to significantly increase the bandwidth of existing telephone lines. Bandwidth is the amount of data - usually measured in bits per second - that can be sent though a connection. Through this technology provided by Lucent, Globe Telecom said it would be be able to offer its customer new services such as Internet access at speeds 100 times faster than current dial up modems.
