Need to be compatible with analog pioneering AMPS through AMPS-TDMA at 30kHz bandwidth, no digital control channel for SMS nor WAPping.

Never heard of EGPRS, I take it? Nor CDMA apparently but that's another matter. EGPRS let's a mobile use teeny-tiny 30khz channels for voice and nice big, well, almost big, 200khz GSM-like channels for data. And it's actually being built. And, yes, TDMA does support digital control channels.

On other matters, I did hear a story about Sprint and CDMA. Sprint originally wanted GSM, but there no GSM-1900 systems back then, Europe being 1800MHz. So Sprint took the second, less preferable, choice of CDMA. Just a fun story I heard.
