I'm not a big fan of asterisks. That's why I was glad Mac and Sammy ended the asterisk beside Maris's name when he broke the Babe's record in '61. Pete's biggest problem was that he hung around with a lot of losers when he was managing the Reds in the late '80s. You're correct; only Pete knows for sure, and he ain't saying. Pete says it's not all that important to him whether he personally makes it into the Hall ... that the bat he used to break Cobb's record is enshrined in Cooperstown, etc. He is a multi-faceted individual. I understand baseball's position on protecting the integrity of the game, but it's hard to justify keeping Pete out when a few of the Hall's later members were convicted of drug crimes. What is absolutely ridiculous is the fact that Major League Baseball banned Pete from a reunion of the '75 Reds earlier this year. Barry Larkin put a rose on third base after all the old-timers were introduced. Nice gesture.
