Junior the folks from alltel who just signed up with infospace have set it up so you can get in and take a look without having to own a cellphone in their coverage area....so this gives you a chance to see exactly what infospace is doing for them.....go to this address
web-unwired.net and fill out the info and where it says cellphone number just leave it blank......the offering from alltel powered by infospace are more extensive than what I saw at voicestream and include mail, to do list, calendar and bookmarks for websites, ability to sync and message boards which will soon be SI ....these not on the voicestream site....I am not sure why that is....the other thing that is confusing is I found this news piece that says alltel is also working with software.com (now part of phone.com) to handle their mail but I see no evidence of that on their site...
software.com
here is some info about web-unwired from the alltel site
Web-Unwired' gives customers freedom to customize service
TAMPA, Fla. - ALLTEL will make it easier than ever for customers in the Florida markets of Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg and south to Ft. Myers to instantly tap into the wireless Internet. The service is also being offered in Lakeland and Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties.
"Web-Unwired," is the first wireless Internet service that can be customized in a retail store and is ready for use immediately.
Web-Unwired demonstrates that ALLTEL is committed to offering our customers the most advanced services in an easy-to-use format," ALLTEL President Scott Ford said. "ALLTEL is going to make it simple and convenient for our customers to communicate, transact business and stay in touch via the Internet when they are on the go."
Nationally, Web-Unwired is also being offered in the markets of Little Rock; Charlotte; Albuquerque, N.M.; Cleveland and Akron, Ohio; and El Paso, Texas. The 10 markets include more than 50 cities.
Customers now can walk into an ALLTEL retail store and select one of the four screen formats as a starting point on the wireless Web. Retail representatives will set up a customer's selection.
"With Web-Unwired, ALLTEL becomes the first carrier to give customers an option for their starting point on the wireless Internet," said Kevin Beebe, ALLTEL's group president of communications. "That choice gives our customers the power to prioritize the information and tools they find most important."
Web-Unwired can be added to select digital rate plans for $5.95 per month and is free for the first two months. Web-Unwired customers can then use their calling plan minutes for voice or data.
"Web-Unwired gives customers greater ability to customize features without having to navigate through specific sites," Beebe said. "We let the customer choose where he wants to go without any restrictions."
With Web-Unwired, customers can send and receive e-mail and view certain Web sites on the Internet. Access to a daily planner, calendar and bookmarks to favorite sites are also at customers' fingertips.
ALLTEL plans to make Web-Unwired available in all of its digital markets by the end of the year.
The four customized designs available in retail stores emphasize different tools of the wireless Web by putting them conveniently at the top of the screen. Whether a customer's priority is access to e-mail and local entertainment listings or bookmarks to favorite sites, Web-Unwired simplifies the route to that information.
Customers also can set up a "My ALLTEL" page with specific information on a variety of topics by visiting www.web-unwired.net via their wireless phones or home computers. Customers can unify their e-mail and set up just one e-mailbox that is accessible by both their wireless phones and home computers.
