Re the GOP re-energizing the campaign:
Allow me to make this observation: In scrolling the 'Net this a.m. I see where Gore accepted Oprah Winfrey's invitation to appear on the first show of her new season, Sept. 11. Oprah also invited Bush but he's still weighing the offer. What's there to weigh?
Here is an excellent opportunity for Bush to pick up some points for style, charisma, personal warmth, etc., in much the same manner that Richard Nixon appeared on the Carson show, and "Laugh-In" and the Nashville Opry, and that Ford and Bush Sr. had fun with those who imitated them on "Saturday Night Live." Bush can't simply concede these types of opportunities to Gore. Millions of people, mostly the female swing vote, watch Oprah, and this will be an excellent opportunity for Bush to flash his sense of humor, which many on this board have complimented.
Yeah, I know, some people will say that Bush will be ambushed by Oprah, whose leanings are obviously left of center, and by Gore. But I doubt if this will be the case. Besides, Bush can easily turn such to his advantage. The questions aren't going to focus on drug plan specifics or the ABM treaty; Oprah's going to ask the candidates like what kinds of books they like to read, what they do in their spare time, how they handle their teen-age children, whether they dye their hair, etc.
Bush would be foolish not to appear, thus conceding all this time to Gore.
Just my opinion, since you mentioned the need for the GOP to re-vitalize the base. |
