JG,

<< I don't get it. SK Telecom resisting pressure to adopt cdma2000 at the same time it proudly announces first trial operation of 1x >>

Probably to some degree the differences in the spectrums where the technologies will be applied, and Koreas (SKT) pioneering efforts in wideband cdma (using a 5MHz channel), their network planning efforts, the availability (or lack therof) of 3x (using a 5MHz channel).

You might recall that Korea 2 years ago submitted not one but 2 proposals to the ITU (actually ETSI/3GIG/3GPP) for wideband cdma to be used in the 2GHz spectrum using a 5MHz channel, and reportedly these proposals were not very much different than the NTT/ERICY proposal that was selected for UTRA FDD.

This of course is just technology stuff. Add in the potential market for UTRA (for Korean manufacturers, some posturing as re royalties, and the potential for NTT to invest.

There is no question in my mind that they will evolve their existing ANSI-41 network through each evolution of 1x cdma2000 in existing spectrum. It also appears (at this time) that with the assistance of Cisco and Nokia they will also pioneer the development of the Network to Network Interface (NNI) and requisite hooks and extensions to bridge to a GSM-MAP and integrate an IP network. All this making them a global superpower in wireless mobile telephony, a strong influence in Asia, and coming soon perhaps to LA.

JMHO of course, and obviously hoping that they will choose cdma2000 for 2GHz spectrum, but hoping at the same time, that if they do, that it is NOT as a result of a government mandate. Realistically, and barring such a mandate, highly likely they will choose WCDMA, again, IMO. We have a month or so of suspense to sit through in the interim. Bummer.
