What do I think of the AFL-CIO spending millions to support candidates who support the working people of this great country? I think it's money well spent.

We need organizations like the AFL-CIO to support people like House Speaker-to-be Dick Gephardt, a true friend of labor, whose father was a Teamster, a union that in recent years has mainly endorsed Republican presidential candidates.

Reread the last paragraph ... that organized labor will be outspent by 11-1 by big business.

The real danger is not that organized labor is spending millions to support its candidates. The real danger is that big business is spending 11 times as much so it can elect puppet congressmen who support legislation allowing big business to dip into pension funds to "shore up" the bottom line.

By the way, let me make one additional point. When we speak of "organized labor," we're speaking of men and women who got to an office, factory or delivery truck and actually work 40 to 55 hours a week. Emphasis on the word "work." These people aren't staying at home waiting for a welfare check or day-trading stocks on their home computers or letting their wives support them while they write the Great American Novel. They're out there working to increase their companies' shareholder equity. So next time one of your stocks goes up, "organized labor" may have had something to do with it. I'd like to chat more but I have to go in to work today (Sunday) to tie up a few loose ends from yesterday.

Have a happy Labor Day, and reflect on all those who gave their lives for the cause.
