Re: TV over Copper/VDSL - You Have to Read the Fine Print

"THE revolution is coming. Next month, London will be covered....BT can cover around three-quarters of the country at speeds of 2.3 megabits per second, which is what it is supplying to Video Networks and Yes for their trials in London. Some people doubt whether that will be acceptable to customers..."

Thread- This story may be the king of TV over copper fluff. No maybe GeoNetworks out of Lucent is still king of fluff. Or maybe it's the Enron/Blockbuster deal? Hmmm. Hard one to figure out which is the most misleading. All three are pretty bad. It's going to be a very long time before anyone of these three PRs become real deployments. At least this story points out the difficulties, if read carefully, of TV over copper. And also, if read carefully, pretty much says it's a test only.

It would take at a minimum, 6(but more like 8) megabits per second for 30/fps TV quality video with current compression standards. MPEG-4 hopes to bring this figure lower, but that's not ready for prime time and I doubt even MPEG-4 could do acceptable level TV quality at 2.3 megabits/second. And getting 8 megabits speeds to the masses is just not reality. At least not for many years.

IMVHO, all three stories are good examples of let the investor beware. I would estimate it'll be years(if ever) before any meaningful revenue stream could hope to be generated from any TV over copper service. -MikeM(From Florida)
