Thank you for a current state of art report on cable telephony. We have known it for some time that cable system has to be digital to acquire the broad bandwidth. More importantly, they have to be digital real time. Ultimately digital same time using multiple trunks in multiple fiber cables, driven by ultra dense wavelength division multiplexers.

The cable digital system is ethernet in nature now, old systems were discarded. Computers in the cable plant are connected to computers in set top boxes. Digital to coaxial cables are RF but no frequency division multiplexers is in the designs yet. Soon, that will be taken care of, also.

Since cable franchise of 35% deployment in each town is a limitation in installation; talking about 400,000 customers becomes fashionable only because the cost of cable subscription is too high.

When the cable systems are truly designed for mass distribution at low cost; you might find 100% deployment of cable in every town and interactive at that. Interactivity should of course include IP and voice telephony. Some one at FCC should take a look at the broadband designs and reduce the cost to subscribers to empower the total cable system in the world. Cable is more of a part of life itself than simply telephony transmission.
