Who are you able to direct your gratitude too? Are you greatful to God or do you just think that YOU deserved such things when others do not.

That's an interesting position. What (or whom) are all the unfortunate people supposed to praise for their situations? Is it because they aren't white Christians that they aren't fortunate? Or should they blame your God for their plight and His capriciousness. This kind of religious hegemony is the basis of wars and many misadventures for those who aren't Christian. Christian excesses in the New World were based precisely upon the view that it was our duty to rob the locals of their livelihood and treasures because they were praying to the wrong God.
