Re: Digital TV - PVR / Replay and TiVo Stats

Thread- As of June 30, 2000 TiVo had 51,000 subscribers. And apparently as of March 31, ReplayTV had 9,000. Hard to say how many more Replay added in Q200. I'm guessing the total for both as of June 30th may be around the 67,000 level.

Currently we have DBS players saying they want to sell the PVRs to their subs, and a few cablecos are saying the same thing. I'm not sure if they want to integrate them into the STB or sell them as stand alones with their name on them. As far as I know both players are only at the PR stage and nothing more.

And I believe some other manufacturers are coming online soon. So that may give a boost to the PVR market too.

Plus Microsoft said they may build them into the X-box too? So it's getting really confusing, but still at the PR stage only: "To constitute the $500 price tag the Xbox will also be a digital VCR with Mpeg2 compression competing with Replay TV and Tivo. The chip only costs Microsoft $16.00 to incorporate it into the Xbox system. Microsoft want to do this as an alternative to Tivo and Replay TV which cost around $400."

I still have my doubts about how well this market is going to develop. I want to keep fairly close track of the facts. If it really takes off, it may be disruptive to the current TV broadcast model and the current STB rollouts.

At this time, my feeling is the PVR functions still belong in the headend. It's only my opinion. -MikeM(From Florida)
