Re: Property tax
Speaking of property tax, why are we taxed on buildings and improvements? All the arguments for property taxes only make sense when applied to the land, not to buildings.

Given that a large portion of home-owners net worth is tied up in their homes and improvements, the current property tax is simply a wealth tax. Worse, it is applied to those who choose to build something permanent but not to those who spend it on consumables or intangibles.

We have a situation near my home where the county assesses tax on finished buildings at a higher rate than when unfinished. The result is that a large number of houses in the countryside are left with tar-paper and chicken-wire on the outside because the increase in property taxes triples the cost of plastering! (An extra $500/yr is 5% interest on $10,000.)

When will the insanity cease?
