The book implies that David fought in self-defense but David was a hired thug for Gath and a thief as well -- stealing the skirt of Saul robe while he was going to the john, and later his spear and waterbottle. It was the mistrust of David by the Philistine princes that prevented David from participating in the slaughter of Saul at Gilboa.
David was perfectly willing to fight.
You must remember that Saul gets the dirty end of the stick because all the writing was done to glorify David, who was a disloyal subordinate.
