David:

Bush's refusal to debate Gore three times in a formal debate setting clearly is a sign of weakness on Bush's part.

Mr. Bush's managers are afraid of positioning him in a setting where he has to give clear and thoughtful answers. They're much more comfortable with the "sound bite" approach that is prevalent on King and Meet the Press.

No doubt Bush's people will contend there's some kind of liberal bias in the Debate Commission setup. (When all else fails, start creating "liberal conspiracies." What a bunch of nonesense. How many other Republicans who engaged in the formal debates ever alleged liberal bias? None.

I also think it's funny that George "volunteered" his running mate to take part in two formal debates while George has agreed to only one. I guess this is an example of his leading by example.

What a joke this is and, more important, it undermines the work of the Debate Commission, a non-partisan group that is trying to illuminate the American people on where the candidates stand.

The American people will see through this phony tactic.
