Bush's tactic is phony in the sense that he is accusing Gore of breaking his word to debate anytime, anyplace. Gore on CNN this morning said he would debate Bush 40 more times in addition to the three scheduled Presidential Commission debates.

Gore, on the other hand, says (and I agree) that if Bush wants to debate on King or Meet the Press, fine. No problem. But Bush also must debate in Boston, Winston-Salem and St. Louis, when all the stations carry the debates and exposure is maximum. It's a little late now for Bush to be pulling out of the debates in Boston and N.C., given the amount of money and time that folks in those cities have put in. I would also think that refusing to debate in North Carolina could hurt Bush's chances in that state. (I wonder what Jesse Helms thinks of Bush's reluctance to debate in his state. Sort of a slap in the face, isn't it?) Perhaps if Bush doesn't want to participate, Gore should take the stage alone in Boston and Winston-Salem.

More important, though, this sets a bad precedent for honest and open debate in future elections. Bush needs to put the American people first and listen less to his strategists.

One last point: I believe it was on King's show four years ago that Gore essentially discredited Perot simply by asking him questions.

Bush better be careful of what he wishes for.
