I guess it isn't surprising that a thread set up to discuss taxes attracts Canadians. We face most of the issues facing c.horn, except that we have more equitable distribution of wealth confiscation. Or should I call it an equitable redistribution of poverty.

Let's hear from the Americans. You Americans will end up where we are if you keep going in the direction of big governments and arrogant bureaucracies. You will long for the days of 15% taxes!

<begin rant>
Try imagining paying 55% (combined provincial and federal income taxes), and then having 16% sales taxes, socialized car insurance (!) and 'wealth ' taxes on cars costing more than US$22K. We can't deduct mortgage interest, and we pay taxes to the Canadian government on income from foreign assets.

I'm not saying you shouldn't gripe. Gripe away. The influence of a competitive U.S. is one of the few hopes we all have for economic freedom. The factor ultimately limiting our taxes is the requirement to compete internationally with the American economy.
<end rant>
