Compaq Computer Ties With P6 & 4 Internet Firms In Japan
Monday, September 4, 2000 01:00 AM

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ, news, msgs) said Monday it has tied up with
five companies in Japan to strengthen its Internet services for corporate clients.

The five partners include portal site operator Excite Japan Co., which will run a "b2bpot.com" portal site
for Compaq's business-to-business electronic commerce services.

The tie-up will complement Compaq's Tuesday launch in Japan of its "iPAQ" low-priced business
computers designed for Internet use.

Compaq's future business PCs in Japan will all have direct Internet buttons on their keyboards which
will provide automatic access to Excite's portal.

Other partners include J-Stream Inc., Japan Communications Inc. and Japanese subsidiaries of
Symantec Corp. (SYMC, news, msgs) and PSINet Inc. (PSIX, news, msgs).

Under the tie-up, J-Stream will provide streaming services such as the transmission of video and audio
data, and Symantec will provide e-commerce security services. Japan Communications will handle
wireless communications and PSINet will provide server hosting and consultant services for clients.

Compaq's iPAQ is "extremely successful" in the U.S. where the company has sold some 200,000
units in the five months since its launch, the company's senior vice president for commercial PC
operation, Michael Winkler, said at a news conference.
