Compaq Computer Ties With P6 & 4 Internet Firms In Japan Monday, September 4, 2000 01:00 AM
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ, news, msgs) said Monday it has tied up with five companies in Japan to strengthen its Internet services for corporate clients.
The five partners include portal site operator Excite Japan Co., which will run a "b2bpot.com" portal site for Compaq's business-to-business electronic commerce services.
The tie-up will complement Compaq's Tuesday launch in Japan of its "iPAQ" low-priced business computers designed for Internet use.
Compaq's future business PCs in Japan will all have direct Internet buttons on their keyboards which will provide automatic access to Excite's portal.
Other partners include J-Stream Inc., Japan Communications Inc. and Japanese subsidiaries of Symantec Corp. (SYMC, news, msgs) and PSINet Inc. (PSIX, news, msgs).
Under the tie-up, J-Stream will provide streaming services such as the transmission of video and audio data, and Symantec will provide e-commerce security services. Japan Communications will handle wireless communications and PSINet will provide server hosting and consultant services for clients.
Compaq's iPAQ is "extremely successful" in the U.S. where the company has sold some 200,000 units in the five months since its launch, the company's senior vice president for commercial PC operation, Michael Winkler, said at a news conference. quicken.com |
