Hi mishedlo; Re RDRAM and niche: Compaq drops RDRAM support from desktop line, moving RDRAM another step closer to obvious niche status:
Odd happenings at Compaq re desktops and RDRAM. I took a visit to the Compaq desktop showroom, and found four types of Desktop machines: Pesario, Deskpro, Prosignia, and iPAQ: www6.compaq.com
The Presario machines are mostly AMD. I believe none of them support RDRAM: athome.compaq.com
The Prosignia and the iPAQ families support SDRAM only: directplus.compaq.com www6.compaq.com
This leaves the Deskpro series. In these, RDRAM is available only in the lower CPU frequencies, not the faster ones:
i815E SDRAM: (with or without TNT2), 933MHz, 866MHz, 800MHz, 733MHz, 667MHz, 600MHz.
i820 RDRAM: 733MHz, 667MHz, and 600MHz. directplus.compaq.com directplus.compaq.com directplus.compaq.com
Kind of odd. RDRAM is supposed to be the high end memory, but it is now only available (from Compaq) with the slowest processors! And all the i815E machines are labeled "new!", while none of the RDRAM machines are so. Kind of makes you think that Compaq is getting rid of their RDRAM machines.
In addition, the RDRAM machines are more expensive, I wonder why. Pretty clear that Compaq preferred the i815 to the i820.
