Two points of information.

First, the company in question, Hutchison-Whampoa, was not set up by the Chinese military. It is an eminently respectable publicly held Hong Kong company formed long before the Chinese takeover of HK, with operations all over the world. No evidence has ever been presented to suggest that Hutchison-Whampoa facilities or personnel have been used by the Chinese military or intelligence services; the allegations are based entirely on the fact that the Company's CEO, Li Ka-Shing, has close connections in Beijing.

Second, Hutchison-Whampoa did not buy out companies in the canal zone; it bid for and won a contract to manage two ports near the ends of the canal. The company has no part in managing the actual operations of the canal.

The story has been blown well out of proportion to suit political agendas, IMO. But if you want to see it in its most extreme version, look at:
