Web Myst - thoughts on Bob Wilson / "intellectual" as a negative characterization (at least in the investing area) :

An example -- from stories I have heard from friends who are involved in venture capital / merchant banking ... I think a Bob Wilson "intellectual" is the person who tries to "shoot down" all incoming business start-up ideas.

He (or she) would spend all mental energy thinking up ways a company would probably fail.

This kind of negative "there's a black cloud behind all (perceived) silver linings" is perhaps useful when hundreds of requests for start-up financing are "crossing" one's desk each month; but it also creates some amazing "legends."

Like -- the person who invented the technique for xeroxing supposedly struggled for years to find anyone to back him financially.

Or ... all of the venture capitalists who turned down eBay (because it sounded so dumb).

I think an intellectual delights in dissecting an idea and ripping it to shreds.

I sense that a lot of people are "down" on the investment merits of Krispy Kreme partly because it such a simple business : make and sell doughnuts.

Jon.
