"Tuesday September 5, 1:10 am Eastern Time Microsoft eyes digital TV in next PC software-WSJ NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) plans to incorporate software for digital television set-top boxes into its next personal computer system software, the Wall Street Journal reported in its electronic version early Tuesday. The company plans to demonstrate a trial version of the software at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam on Friday, the newspaper said, quoting sources familiar with Microsoft's strategy. The next Microsoft operating system, dubbed Whistler, could offer consumers the possibility of a single device to power their television sets and PCs, the newspaper reported. Such a move could potentially thrust the software giant into competition with companies such as OpenTV Corp (NasdaqNM:OPTV - news) and Liberate Technologies Inc (NasdaqNM:LBRT - news), both of which make software giving television interactive features similar to the Internet.
