Jake,
There has been a very hopeful breakthrough, similiar to what you describe, in certain advanced cancer patients. Kidney and Colon varieties were put in reversal without Kemo or other toxic agents in a way similiar to what you describe. In the article I read there was even hopes for use on other types of cancer. I didn't read of viral aplications but perhaps it is a cousin to R. I'm out of my league here, maybe someone at ADVR could enlighten us.
