Frank,

Just getting back in... I believe we were discussing MPLS and how it renders backbone optical networks "dumb" or perhaps better said "big iron".

It's my understanding that MPLS (L for lambda) works similarly to MPLS (L for label) in IP/ATM nets. If this is the case the network elements are "signaled" by a external management element to set up and tear down neccessary circuits. The network element acts on advice from the "tags" or "labels" in the header of IP packets which are created at edge IP network elements. SO, in effect the optical backbone is being controlled by an external management system which is getting it's instructions from edge IP devices....

I know this is a poor use of the term "signaled" ... I guess it's really a combination of signaled and provisioned.

Anyway... your thoughts are welcome and appreciated.
