The worker ants are unfertilized clones of the queen. They are in a sense just an unattached part of her body. The fertilized offspring become new queens or drones and they behave much more selfishly than the workers.

But if the worker ants are (in a sense) the queen, then they are behaving very selfishly...

Just as a man is behaving selfishly when he puts his children into the lifeboat, and faces his death. Through consciousness he has shifted his identity to include that which he loves as being in some sense a part of himself. We talk about a loved one as being in our minds and hearts be they ever so far away. This can be a pathological symbiosis as well--as in the case of murder-suicides...
