GVTucker, <<<Dell has given the short sellers plenty of ammo. There's no need for any FUD. >>>
It is all about managing expectations. When MSD was more hands-on, no one managed expectations any better. Jack Welch and Roberto Gozueta is/was grand masters at managing expectations. Intel never had a clue and still don't know what that is all about.
When done properly, when you manage your business according to plan, and when you provide proper guidance (creating a lot of credibility over the years) no one would have to listen to analysts. After all, who knows your business better than you do. The best that an analyst could do is do what a TV weather announcer does - make some (educated?) guess. Those people don't have to have any training in meteorology. They could be comics, eye doctors, sons and daughters of celebraties, have big assets, or whatever.
Wrt DELL, current price should already include all forecasts about consumer PC weakness. The only thing that is in question is in the enterprise market. There, I don't think anyone has a handle on it over the next several quarters - not even DELL. And, I'm not that confident that the new C0-Ceos can really manage expectations.
But, I think there is more likely an upside surprise - if DELL's new management are not complete idiots.
