Maybe Clymer is not a "quality person." I don't know. That's not the issue. For Bush and Cheney to hide behind the "this was a personal comment" screen only downgrades their credibility. A point that everyone is overlooking is that even when GWB is among friends in suburban Michigan, he still finds time to let his negative personality show through. Contrast that with Al Gore's meetings with working men and women yesterday in Pennsylvania. There was no negativity there. Lots of positive vibes. A better idea re: the reporter would be to analyze the substance of Clymer's articles concerning GWB's poor record on health issues in Texas. Were they inaccurate? Bush needs to respond to the "inaccuracies" rather than simply call the writer an asshole. By the way, the DNC is bringing out a bunch of TV ads today focusing on that very topic: GWB's not-so-good record on health issues in the state of Texas.
