Firestone's outside PR firm drops tire maker as client
DETROIT, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Fleishman-Hillard International Communications Inc., the outside public relations firm working with embattled Firestone, is dropping the tire maker as a client as of Tuesday, an agency spokesman said.

``We resigned because it became evident we could no longer be of service to Bridgestone/Firestone,'' said Dave Senay, general manager of Fleishman's St. Louis office.

Fleishman told the company of its decision on Sunday, said Senay, who declined to comment further. Fleishman agreed to work with Firestone until Tuesday, one day before Congressional hearings get underway in Washington.

Firestone, a unit of Japan's Bridgestone , retained Fleishman in July, before the Aug. 9 recall of 6.5 million 15-inch tires.

The tire maker has been struggling ever since to cope with the recall amid mounting reports that the tires may shred and cause deadly accidents. Regulators in the United States are looking into reports the tires are linked to 88 deaths.

Officials in Venezuela have recommended criminal charges against both Firestone and automaker Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - news), and said the tires are connected with 46 traffic deaths. Most of the suspect tires are on Ford Explorer sport utility vehicles.

A person who answered the phone at Bridgestone/Firestone's Nashville, Tenn., U.S. headquarters said no one was available to comment on the agency's decision.
