Toyota Confirms Use of GM's OnStar, to Offer It in Lexus LS 430 9/5/00 1:41:00 PM Source: Bloomberg News URL: cnetinvestor.com, Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said it will offer General Motors Corp.'s OnStar as an option in the Lexus LS 430 sedan, as Japan's largest automaker finally confirmed it will use the communications system.
Toyota had been in discussions with GM, the world's largest automaker, for several months, though it had refused to confirm an OnStar order as recently as last month. Ford Motor Co. in July introduced a competing service, Wingcast, which Nissan Motor Co. plans to use in its Infiniti luxury vehicles.
Toyota is the second rival automaker to sign up for the GM system, which uses global-positioning satellite technology and lets subscribers call for roadside help, access directions and travel information, and track a vehicle if it's stolen. Honda Motor Co. in May said it planned to equip U.S. versions of its Acura sedans with OnStar.
Prices for the Lexus LS 430, which goes on sale Oct. 12, and for OnStar and the car's other optional equipment haven't been set yet, Toyota said.
Shares of Detroit-based GM fell 19 cents to 72.94. Toyota's American depositary receipts, which each represent two ordinary shares, fell 2.25 to 85. Toyota's U.S. operations are based in Torrance, California.
