Good morning Eric. Either you are up late on the left coast or up early on the right as myself. I followed the Source Media and TV Guide situation prior to the merger announcement as it was suggested that the two were working together to engineer around foe Gemstar. To the best of my knowledge the attempt failed and consequently the alliance was terminated. The Source Media methodology has been known by the industry for some time and is not really new news.

The CableVision Boston news should be viewed in context. They are piloting the system in a market that will be turned over to AT&T in six months or so (see linked article). Gemstar-TVG has an exclusive 10 year contract with AT&T. All I know is that the attempt to engineer around ran into more of Gemstar's intellectual property and had latency problems. This may prove to be an interim solution awaiting digital STB deployment by AT&T in 2001 to minimize sub losses to satellite.
