Alcatel to begin selling WAP cellphones in Finland

HELSINKI, Sept 6 (Reuters) - French telecom equipment maker Alcatel said on Wednesday it would begin selling its Internet-enabled WAP mobile phones in Finland, which is the home market of the world's biggest cellphone maker, Nokia.

Alcatel said in a statement that it would bring its one-touch 302 and 303 models onto the Finnish market within the next few weeks and introduce other models later.

It would begin marketing several models of its 300, 500 and 700 series WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) phones in Finland soon, the company said.

``We know that we are coming to Finland late, but only now do we have products suitable for this market,'' Alcatel said. ``Finns are pioneers in using mobile phones.''

WAP is a technology that enables mobile phone users to access scaled-down content over the Internet using their phones.

Nokia was the first company to launch a WAP phone, and Finland, alongside Iceland, has the world's highest rate of mobile phone market penetration.
