Intersil's PRISM II Card Earns Microsoft Certification
Microsoft grants WHQL certification of PRISM II WLAN Card
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 6, 2000-- Intersil Corporation, the world's leading developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), announced today that the PCMCIA card implementation of its PRISM II Reference Design has received certification from Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL). The purpose of Microsoft's WHQL is to ensure the compatibility of hardware with Microsoft Operating Systems.

The Microsoft certification specifies that the PRISM II, 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Card (HWB-3163) has passed Microsoft® Windows® ME and Microsoft® Windows® 98 and Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional Logo Testing by WHQL. This certification paves the way for Intersil customers who base their designs on the PRISM II Reference Design and want to display the Microsoft Windows logos on their packaging.

The PRISM II chip set is the current flagship of Intersil's wireless LAN portfolio. It is the world's most complete silicon solution for the design of WLANs and sits at the heart of the PRISM II Reference Design and evaluation card. This card is also approved by the FCC, received Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) interoperability certification from the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) and now has garnered Microsoft's stamp of approval.

``Receiving Microsoft's WHQL certification further validates Intersil's commitment to provide a complete solution package for our WLAN customers,'' said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of PRISM Wireless Products at Intersil. ``We will continue to add software, firmware and other design enhancements around our PRISM portfolio and seek industry certifications such as this as a way of speeding our customers' products to market.''

Adoption of PRISM WLAN Technology

Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, over fifty companies have incorporated PRISM chips in more than 100 product designs. In a May 2000 report, the Cahners In-Stat Group called Intersil ``the dominant force in the WLAN chip set marketplace with their PRISM chipsets holding the majority of market share.'' PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEE's 802.11 global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi(TM) brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11-based systems. PRISM chips are used in WLAN systems from industry-leading companies including Alcatel, Cisco, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, Nortel, Samsung, Siemens, SpectraLink, Symbol, and Zoom.
