Officials and industry experts have reached an
agreement that China Unicom, the sole telecom
operator in China running CDMA (Code Division
Multiple Access) telecommunications system,
should re-launch its CDMA project as soon as
possible, China Daily reported today.

They also suggested that China Unicom form a
new subsidiary to specialize in CDMA network in
a bid to strengthen its performance in the country's
telecommunications market.

CDMA system is of paramount importance for
China Unicom to compete against China Telecom
in the domestic market. Once in operation, the
system will help China Unicom to grab a larger
market share than at present, they said.

In another development, China Unicom's strategy
to develop narrowband CDMA-95A, which is
compatible to CDMA2001x of the third generation
of telecommunications, will contribute to the
smooth transition from the current narrowband
network to the third generation mobile
telecommunication system, sources from the
Ministry of Information Industry said.

China Unicom was involved in the construction of
CDMA system in 1999.
