Slightly OT: Analysts in Disarray?

A few months ago, JJ from Soly upgraded Micron- a commodity DRAM maker, while at the same time talking about a peak in the semi market.

Today, DLJ downgraded Micron from target of $150 to $50!.

Yesterday, Ashok Kumar from Piper Jaffray downgraded Intel from Strong buy to buy. He had all the points right (I thought), but his buy rating is ludicrious. If he really believed in what he said, then the rating should have been a hold (or even sell). If Intel is really a 2H 2001 story-as he claimed- and that too based on Itanium, then would you not want to wait to see how that oft delayed chip is really faring before "buy"'ing Intel? Would you rather not hold?

It seems that there is not one analyst with the balls to really put Intel on a rating that is in line with their comments!

Additionally no comments on AMD? Heck, if Intel's yields (according to him) at 1G are <5% and AMD is at 1.1G and has stated publically that they will intro 1 new processor every 5-6 weeks, would this not mean that in a few months Intel will be so far behind that it will not even be funny (even to the AMD investor :)?

Hence the Q. Analysts in Disarray?
