I think VectorVest is a good tool to have and to use. It provides backtesting capabilities that many packages lack. It also has next 12 months profit projections. You can follow provided strategies or develop your own.

For example my "Big Dog" procedure of holding five stocks as long as they rank in the top 15 on a weekly basis as of Sept 1, 2000 has the following results:
5 day % Change 4.5
10 day 12.3
One month 23.7
Three months 11.8
YTD 28.5
12 months 230.9
24 months 863 per year

I rank the stocks by RT*RT*RT*RT*GRT
I screen with
Price > 5
GRT > 20
EPS > 0.01
MC > 2000
Sales > 100
AvgVol > 30,000
RT > 1.5

I expect with a little more study one could improve on these parameters. Currently the strategy is holding PWER ADI SMTC JNPR and EXTR.
