RE: Estimation of number of users.

Don't know how sophisticated you want to get, but here is a
reference problem from a master in Probability and Statistics.

Feller, An Intorduction to Probability Theory and Its Applications.,
Vol 1., Second Edition, 1960.

Page 43 has a worked problem: "Estimation of the size of an animal population from recapture data". He estimates the number of fish in a lake. I think this type of analysis could fit into your problem.
