ALSC has sold off on the MU downgrade and is now trading below book value. You can buy this for the short term rebound or long term potential as it capitalizes on its high asset value. Among the attractions of ALSC are low fixed costs and high liquidity. If the chip market remains strong, ALSC can take advantage of additional production capacity available through production allocation rights. If the chip market weakens, ALSC will not be hurt as much as companies with higher fixed costs and will be able to profit from attractive investment opportunities.

More seriously vulnerable are the semi equip stocks. If there is any hint of weakening chip demand, semi equip companies are likely to be among the biggest casualties. Emerging fears about chip gluts may temper commitments to new building projects. Paradoxically, this generally has the effect of lengthening the semi cycle by forestalling the overbuilding of production capacity.
