Great post Don, I also believe there is foot dragging on this advancement but I also believe that the Japanese have a different ajenda that will drive the future.

Energy is a different story over there. The gasoline economy in Japan is not quite as strong. The future of their economy can not develop with imported energy. For them it is critical to develop technology that can be contained internally in order for them to succeed internationally.

The energy cost is too high for Tokyo to import, it adds to the cost of them doing business. The country will develop hybrids first (now) and wait for developed fuel cells to go total electric. This will force GM etal in the USA to counter the developments or they will lose market share.

I believe the latter will happen before any action is taken. We will see window dressing developments but like you mentioned, car part replacement items and the interlocking relationships with oil will keep the change from starting early.

Can they stop this development? I doubt it, but delay it they can, by using smaller higher tech gas engines. They might even embrace hybrids at some point, but once the door is open.... It will be painful, I can not see a smooth transition. Too many forces at work, that will lose.
