False Claims - Actions by the SEC

...Several of the actions brought by the SEC involve false press releases and other information issued by the principals of microcap companies, or that the principals allowed to go out on the company's Web site.

For instance, the SEC alleged that the principals of educational-software maker Heartsoft Inc. drove its stock up more than 1,500 percent, from 21 cents to nearly $6, by issuing fraudulent press releases with "a myriad of false and misleading statements."

The releases were all investors had to go on, the SEC claims, because Heartsoft did not file required financial statements with the SEC for two and a-half years.

The SEC claims the two men netted more than $160,000 in "illicit profits." Without admitting or denying the allegations, Heartsoft's principals consented to disgorge all their trading profits and pay civil penalties of $50,000 each.
