Tenchusatsu,

This is the kind of favoritism that makes anti-Rambus parties like Micron cry, "Anti-trust violation!"

You don't need to take cash in return for your IP -- you need a "balanced benefit" (my phrase) in the deal. You can take sincere marketing efforts, exclusivity, etc. in place of cash. It's not favoritism.

If Micron offered to push RDRAM as strongly as Intel and become a truly strong advocate of RDRAM, I'll bet that Rambus would give them the licenses almost for free (the key is obviously to have real, measurable milestones in place to ensure that it's not just lip-service). But Rambus could make a strong case to follow-on licensees that the PR value of their signing is significantly less than Micron's.
