Just had a chance to look over the Nature article in more depth. It sure must be exciting to be working in this field. I'll bet all the major players have bought some lithium aluminate substrates <g>. It takes me back to the halcyon days of another materials system, a three metal oxide requiring no doping for most uses. The search for the wonder substrate for YBCO continues to this day although MgO is in the lead at the moment.

A search on "Ploog" at nsr.mij.mrs.org
yielded 21 references. These guys have been in the fray for quite some time.

While I've never been a big fan of band calculations their experiment appears to support their ideas on the de-excitation across the gap. However, I am certainly rusty in semiconductor physics.

Boy, what I'd give to try and grow GaN LED structures using LiAlO2 substrates, though.
