LSI Logic Joins Compork's PCI-X Golden
Master Program

LSI Logic to License PCI-X Core Technology in
Development of Products Using Fusion-MPT Architecture for
High-Performance Storage Designs

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI - news), a leading supplier
of communications chips and storage network solutions, announced today that it has joined the
Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news) PCI-X Golden Master Program. As part of this
innovative program, LSI Logic will obtain early access to the benefits of Compaq's PCI-X core
development technology to produce competitive storage solutions that compliment LSI Logic's
Fusion-MPT(TM) (Message Passing Technology) architecture for high-performance I/O products.

``LSI Logic is proud to be supporting the Golden Master Program, which is yet another example of
Compaq and LSI Logic working together to provide timely, low-risk solutions for future computing
platforms,'' said John D'Errico, executive vice president of Storage Components for LSI Logic. ``By
adopting Compaq's PCI-X core as a component of our Fusion-MPT architecture, we ensure compatibility
with industry-leading solutions in a high-performance market.''

As the leader in development of PCI-X technology, Compaq introduced the Golden Master Program to
provide best-in-class PCI-X solutions to the industry. Golden Master Program members include industry
leading vendors, selected by Compaq, who are licensing Compaq's PCI-X technology and providing value
added solutions to best serve their customer's needs. Compaq provides Golden Master participants with
valuable tools and information that will simplify and accelerate industry adoption of PCI-X based
products.

``With the introduction of the PCI-X Golden Master Program, Compaq continues to lead in enabling
PCI-X product development and integration for the industry,'' said Ken Jansen, Director of Technology
Development, Industry-Standard Server Group, Compaq Computer Corporation. ``We are pleased that
LSI Logic has joined Compaq's Golden Master Program and we look forward to working closely with
them in the development of PCI-X-based solutions.''

PCI-X is an innovative and evolutionary I/O technology that increases system performance through
greater I/O performance and efficiency. A compatible extension of the existing PCI bus, the 64-bit PCI-X
architecture runs at speeds up to 133 MHz, providing transfer rates above one gigabyte per second (up
to eight times the speed of current PCI bus technology). This critical I/O bandwidth is needed for
systems running enterprise applications such as Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, Ultra320 SCSI, and
cluster interconnects.

By combining Compaq PCI-X core technology with LSI Logic's PCI-X buffers and Fusion-MPT
architecture, LSI Logic will offer world-class storage solutions with PCI-X interfaces. Fusion-MPT
architecture is the basis of LSI Logic's next-generation I/O products and is designed to be extensible to
other physical interfaces as they emerge. Fusion-MPT architecture encompasses LSI Logic's
Fusion-MPT firmware architecture, LSI Logic's Ultra320 SCSI and Fibre Channel hardware architectures,
and the operating system level drivers that support these architectures. Fusion-MPT architecture has
the unique feature of one operating system level driver that supports both Fibre Channel and SCSI.

Based on industry standard ARM® processor technology, LSI Logic's Fusion-MPT architecture is
currently shipping on the SYMFC909 Fibre Channel controller and is featured in the new SYMFC929
dual-channel Fibre Channel controller. Fusion-MPT development kits are available by contacting your
local LSI Logic sales representative.
