LEVALLOIS-PERRET, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 6, 2000--

In an effort to address often neglected PDA TCO issues, Microsoft and
Extended Systems will deliver advanced server-based solutions for
Microsoft Windows-powered Pocket PCs that improve synchronization, management, security and remote software distribution.

Extended Systems (Nasdaq:XTND - news), provider of XTNDConnect Server data synchronization and management solutions, and Microsoft Corp., creators of the Pocket PC platform, have announced a collaboration to provide corporate customers with a wider choice of secure PDA synchronization and management solutions which will optimize total cost of ownership (TCO).

With Microsoft® Windows®-powered Pocket PCs and XTNDConnect Server, mobile workers will now have direct access to enterprise data, wherever they are and whenever they need it. Moreover, system administrators will have the management and deployment tools required to efficiently manage Pocket PC devices and the strategic corporate data residing on them. XTNDConnect Server provides direct and secured access to Microsoft Exchange Servers and ODBC databases such as Microsoft SQL Server(TM). The remote management tools are integrated into the Microsoft Management Console to build a full management solution particularly recommended for use with the new Microsoft BackOffice® family and Windows 2000 operating system.

Enterprise Connectivity

Pocket PC systems include the standard CompactFlash (CF) technology (extension connector), and it is no longer necessary to use a PC connected docking station to connect to the network. Mobile workers are free to choose the fastest connection: wireless (GSM/GPRS, 802.11), 56Kbps cable modem or Ethernet link. Moreover, CF components represent a solid investment for companies, as they use standardized technologies and are available for use with other devices or PCs with PCMCIA ports.
