I really blew it on that not much difference post. I was trying to say that paying taxes isn't as bad when you get something in return. I agree that getting something in return isn't much comfort when it's something you don't want in the first place.

I was attempting to make a comparison between taxes used to provide goods and services which most people would acquire privately, and hence, the expense is only shifted from the left pocket to the right, but remains constant, to those taxes which seem to get poured down those infinitely cavernous rat-holes politicians and bureaucrats seem so astoundingly proficient at uncovering.

The difference, for me, is between blood vessel bursting outrage and simply another entry in my wish list for a perfect world.
