Westell Grabs Top Market Share in Desktop ADSL Modems
AURORA, Ill., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Westell Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: WSTL - news) announced today that its Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) Business Unit is now the worldwide market leader in desktop ADSL modem sales, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group Inc.

According to the Dell'Oro findings, Westell gained the top spot in the desktop ADSL modem market during the second quarter of 2000 by shipping 350,000 of its WireSpeed(TM) ADSL modems in that quarter. During the quarter, Westell's CPE Business Unit established itself as a preeminent supplier of broadband solutions, making a huge jump from fifth to second place in overall DSL modem shipments.

``This strong performance validates Westell's market approach, with innovative products and a focus on desktop modems, residential users, and integrated access devices,'' said Mike Santiago, Vice President and General Manager of Westell's CPE Business Unit. ``Our objective now is to leverage this success to become the number one supplier of desktop, residential and small business DSL products. Westell is on the leading edge of DSL product development, and with our strategic focus in place, we believe we will continue to excel in our market areas.''

Westell CPE Business Unit's strong performance in the first fiscal quarter, ending June 30, is the latest in a series of robust quarterly results. CPE reported quarter-to-quarter sales growth of more than 280 percent, fueled largely by demand for quality DSL products. In the June 30 quarter, Westell Technologies' DSL sales accounted for 63 percent of total revenues.

A fast-growing broadband access technology, DSL continues to be rapidly adopted in the residential marketplace. Dataquest is projecting that U.S. DSL modem sales will reach 3.7 million units this year, surpassing cable modem and ISDN sales combined. Westell's WireSpeed DSL modems provide an ``always-on'' high-speed Internet connection, offering speeds up to 125 times faster than 56K modems. WireSpeed modems are ``plug and play,'' easy to install and offer simple, cost-effective DSL access.
